PASTORAL LEADERS AND ASSISTANTS TRAINING DAY

(Numbers 11:10-17; Acts 6:1-7; Ephesians 4:11-14);

Facilitator: Dr Prince Brown-Engmann

  1. Why Pastoral team?
  2. Qualities of a pastoral provider
  3. Needs identified in the Fellowship
  4. How can those needs be met?
  5. What sort of training do I require in order to be more effective and efficient?

ELDERS (LEADERS) QUALIFICATION

There are two ways the term ‘elder’ has been used in the scriptures.  It is used to describe older men and women (I Tim. 5: 1- 2).  The other usage is to describe special men and women who meet certain qualifications and are appointed to the work of overseeing the congregation where they serve (Titus. 1: 5; I Pet. 5: 1-4).  It is in the context of the latter meaning that the word, elder, has been used in this document.

Elders, among other things, provide pastoral oversight (support), which is a small part of their duties, to fellowship members. To this end therefore, pastoral leaders or assistant pastoral leaders form the  eldership of our fellowship.

    1. Why criteria necessary?
    2. Throughout the bible, people in leadership positions were not chosen willy nilly. For example,  Saul and David were chosen to be kings though outwardly there were men of better status (1 Sam 10:26-27; 16:5-12)

Jesus had many disciples but chose twelve whom he also designated apostles (Luke 6:12-13)

The wellbeing and spiritual growth of the body of Christ is dependent on the  quality of leaders we have  (Acts 6:1-7; 2 Cor 11:28).

    3. The desirable qualities of a Pastoral Leader / Assistant
    4.  (1 Timothy. 3:1-13 and Titus. 1:5-9)

We expect a leader  to be an example to the flock and to have an oversight of the flock (I Pet. 5: 2- 3;  Acts 20: 28).  The following are the basic qualities we expect a leader to possess.

  1. Willingness to serve  (I Tim. 3: 1).
  2. Must be blameless – The character should be such that others cannot legitimately find fault with him/her (I Tim. 3: 2; Eph. 4: 29; ).
  3. Must be spiritually vigilant regarding themselves and the flock they oversee ( Heb. 13: 17).
  4. Must be self-control ie not lose his/her temper  when challenged or irritated (Titus 1: 8).
  5.  Must be sober – well-balanced and sound mind (I Tim. 3: 2, ).
  6.  Must be given to hospitality –  willing to assist others and come to their aid  (I Tim. 3: 2, Titus 1: 8).
  7.  Must be able to teach (I Tim. 3: 2, Titus 1: 9).
  8. Must not be given to wine (I Tim. 3: 3, Titus. 1: 7).
  9. Must not be greedy or lover of money (I Tim. 3: 3, Titus. 1: 7; I Pet. 5: 2).
  10. Must be patient  (I Tim. 3: 2).
  11. Must not have a contentious spirit or quarrelsome manner. Must help to settle disputes in the fellowship. (I Tim. 3: 3).
  12. Must not be self-willed, domineering and arrogant (Tit. 1: 7; I Pet. 5: 3).
  13. Must be appreciative of the goodness in others  (Titus 1: 8).
  14.  Must be just and fair  (Titus 1: 8).
  15.  S/he must live a consistent, godly life  (Titus 1: 8).
  16. Must be humble. Your popularity must not be the motivation for being a leader  (I Tim. 3: 3, Tit. 1: 7; I Pet. 5: 2).
